March Housing Starts Up 7.2% From February

Economists had expected housing starts to climb to 520,000 in the month.

The report, however, still represented a 13.4% year-over-year drop from the 634,000 reported in March of 2010.

Homebuilding permits, a measure of future construction activity, increased at a seasonally adjusted rate of 11.2%, coming in at 594,000.

That number was also down significantly from March of last year, when 685,000 permits were filed.

U.S. builders started construction on 549,000 homes in March, a 7.2% seasonally adjusted increase from 512,000 in February, which was revised up from 479,000.

First Solar Breaks Ground On New Vietnamese PV Plant (FSLR)

The four-line, $300 million plant is scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2012 and will produce 250 MW of thin-film solar modules per year, with the ability to expand further.

The factory will include a recycling plant through which up to 90% of a module's semiconductor materials and glass, by weight, is recovered for use in new solar modules and glass products.

The plant will employ 600 associates.

Hovnanian Saw Greater Than Projected Loss, Q1 Net Contracts Down 13% (HOV)

In contrast, Q1 2010 saw net income of $236.2 million, or $2.97 per diluted share, on revenues of $319.6 million. The mean analyst estimate was for a Q1 2011 loss of $0.61a share.

The homebuilding company saw a 13% decrease in net contracts from the prior year to 792 homes in the quarter.
